Hitler and the Berlin Gov't wanted and needed to have Austria reunited with main Germany and be liberated from the domination of the Western powers. In March1938, they made their move.

Not that the wikipedia notes GERMANY needed unification with German-Austria for economic growth, and for access to needed minerals and other natural resources
