There are 193 member countries in the United Nations (UN) as of September 2025. All member states have an equal vote in the UN General Assembly, which is the UN's primary deliberative and policy-making body.
As of September 23, 2025, 157 United Nations member states recognize the State of Palestine. The number has increased recently due to new announcements, including several Western nations.
Recent recognitions in 2025
Following a two-state solution summit at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, several countries formally announced their recognition of a Palestinian state: September 22, 2025: Belgium, France, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, and Andorra recognized Palestine. Belgium stated that the legal effect of its recognition would occur after conditions like Hamas releasing hostages are met. September 21, 2025: Australia, Canada, Portugal, and the United Kingdom announced their recognition. March 2025: Mexico recognized Palestine.
The following nations recognized Palestinian statehood in 2024, citing the ongoing genocide in Gaza:
Armenia and Slovenia. Ireland, Norway, and Spain. Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Bahamas.
Significant countries that do not yet recognize the State of Palestine include:
United States Germany Italy Japan South Korea
Context of recognition ...While recognition holds symbolic and diplomatic importance, it has not altered the reality of the Israeli occupation on the ground. The international community generally views a two-state solution, with Israel and Palestine existing side-by-side, as the only viable path to lasting peace.
