Controlled opposition gets "considerable" coverage by the media, that is one way you can suspect someone is "controlled opposition". In this scenario the media entertains some mildly divergent thoughts through a chosen spokesperson yet this 'hero' spokesperson is an agent paid to curtail indepth discussion and solutions to any given problems leaving the opposition believing they have truth and answers not knowing that they have been neutered.
